Prayer is a loving exchange with God. Prayer is an outpouring of our deepest spiritual yearning. We can find spiritual power, direction, insight, joy, and inner peace through prayer (Psalms 118:5-6 and 138:3, Isaiah 58:9-11, Philippians 4:6-7, and 1 Peter 5:7).
Prayer may be of any length, performed in a group or alone. Regardless, it should be a true communication with God and not done for public recognition (Matthew 6:5-8). Remember that it is not religious activity or requirement that grants salvation or favor from God, but the result of it. You pray because you have an assurance of salvation in Him. You pray because you know you are part of His family, and you have found favor in His sight through Jesus Christ.
Tuning into Your Spirituality
In the Bible, we also find many instances where music was intrinsic to prayer (Psalm 150:3-4
Job 21:12). Psalm 96:1 says, “sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.”
There are several examples of music being used as prayer in the Bible. The book of Psalms was originally a collection of songs, but we now mostly use them for prayer. In the book of Acts, we witness Paul and Silas praying and singing while imprisoned.
“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.” (See Acts 16:25.)
Music has long been utilized to help people connect more profoundly with Scripture and prayer. When you pray, you can use music to help you meditate. You may pray with a song to begin or close your prayer time, or you could devote an hour to actively listening to worship or devotional music. You can pray with music while doing other activities simultaneously as well, or as part of your daily or evening prayer habit.
Here are some of the ways you can incorporate music in your prayer time:
1. Select a Song
When you want to include music in your prayer time, be led by the Spirit as to what music you should pray and worship with. You can choose praise songs to get you going in the morning, and devotional or meditation songs as you wind down at night.
2. Take a Moment to Pause and Meditate
The word “Selah” that you often see in Psalms and Habakkuk means to pause. It appears 71 times in Psalms alone. It means “to praise” or “to pause and reflect upon what has just been said.” When you pray with music or pray in general, it’s crucial that you take a moment to meditate on the scripture or lyrics you are using. Let the Holy Spirit speak to you through the song, and reflect on what the song or Scripture means to you personally.
Even if you don’t have an hour to pray, taking pause moments to fully digest what God is saying to you in prayer and in the music you’re playing is a great way to maximize being in the presence of God.
3. Let the Music Help You Communicate with God
Music can help you focus and relax during other moments of prayer as well. Prayer is simply talking to God and letting your heart out. It is also a great way to repeat what the Word is saying over your particular situation, be it through Scriptures you’re putting music into, or singing along with a song that you identify with. Even if it’s not your song, you can make it personal and from the heart, and use it as a vehicle to take you to the presence of God.
Conclusion: Worship God with the Music
God is the Great Inventor of music. It is a great way of self-expression as we commune with Him in prayer. You can sing new songs from your heart. As Psalm 40:3 (TPT) says,
“A new song for a new day rises up in me every time I think about how He breaks through for me! Ecstatic praise pours out of my mouth until everyone hears how God has set me free. Many will see his miracles; they’ll stand in awe of God and fall in love with him!”
To summarize, worshiping God with music is a very Biblical thing to do. It’s a practice that helps you express your gratitude, praise, and love for the Lord.
